There is really only one prerequisite for coming on a trip to the Fiat Nationals - can you stand around for extended periods of time talking all things Fiat with groups of likeminded people? If the answer is yes (the fact that you are a member of this club is a pretty good indication of that) you will almost certainly enjoy the Fiat Nationals.
There has been some kind of national gathering of Fiat clubs in Australia every year since 1964. The event has changed a great deal over the past four decades, but the one thing that has remained the same is a group of loyal and fun loving Fiat enthusiasts getting together for one weekend a year to catch up, discuss anything Fiat related, solve the world's problems over a beer and engage in some light competition in their Fiats.
The 2011 Fiat Nationals will be held at Goulburn, in country NSW for the second time. Goulburn is a typical country town - large wide streets, pretty scenery and welcoming locals. However it also happens to be located less than 10km from one of the country's best race tracks - something that may have had something to do with its selection.
The event kicks off on the Friday night when the social barbeque is held. This is a good opportunity to catch up with fellow club members from around the country and is a very informal and casual affair. Saturday morning see's the running of the famous Fiat of Italy cup motorkhana. This is a series of low speed tests conducted on a grass surface and is a great way to have a go at some (literally) grassroots motorsport. The motorkhana is ideal for beginners and first timers and is a great way to get involved in some competition that places little to no risk or strain on the car.
A show n shine is held on Saturday afternoon, and while its location is yet to be announced, the day is always capped off with yet another social event, this time the annual Saturday night social barbeque and raffle.
Sunday will be a great day and will provide the opportunity to drive one of the best race tracks in the country in the company of other Fiat and Lancia vehicles. Wakefield Park is 2.2km of twisting blacktop, prompting Paul Morris to call it the "best short track circuit in Australia today". Wakefield Park is known as a very safe circuit with no walls positioned close to the track and wide, grassy runoffs. The Fiat Nationals sprint is very much aimed toward beginners and people using their ordinary road vehicles, and Wakefield Park is an ideal circuit for this. Never driven on a racetrack before? This is the perfect chance to come try it out!
The event concludes with a presentation dinner where trophies are presented and tall stories are told. In addition to the various class trophies, an overall event winner will be crowned as will the state with the highest accumulated points in the motorkhana who will win the coveted 'Fiat of Italy cup'. All up it's a fun weekend away with a bunch of great people, and I would highly recommend it to anyone considering going.
The 2011 Fiat Nationals promises to be a great event - Motorkhana with the Fiat of Italy Cup, Supersprinting at Wakefield Park , and a "Presentazione", or Concours and Show'n Shine. Not to mention the legendary social side - it's worth going for that alone.
